The high road scenic route to Strontian Hotel is one of the most beautiful routes in the UK and unmissable anyway! It takes approximately an hour to an hour and a half longer, and fuel, refreshments and toilets are all available en-route, so you should be comfortable and able to enjoy the journey.

There are two routes in which you can travel - each as beautiful as the next.
When coming from Fort William you can chose to go via Glenfinnan (A830) and take in the stunning sights of the Viaduct and Bonnie Prince Charlie’s monument, carry on to Lochailort and take the turning for Strontian (A861), you then take in the breathtaking views of the Islands from Glenuig…… just before you hit Acharacle you can pop down and have a meander around Castle Tioram - watch out for the little brown castle sign on the rhodedrendron corner as it's easy to miss.
If you chose to take the A861 down the side of Loch Linnhe you will encounter the breathtaking views across the loch of Ben Nevis and the wonderful scenery on route…
Corran – Strontian - Distance: 57 miles – 1 hr 36 min
- Follow the A82 North (towards the A861)
- Continue on the A82 North
- Turn left on to the A830 at Lochybridge Roundabout
- Continue on the A830 for approx. 11.9 miles
- Turn left on to the A861 (Drumsallie) height restriction 12’-0”
- Continue on the A861 (single track road) to Ardgour, double track from Ardgour to Strontian.
Corran - Strontian
Instead of taking the Corran Ferry over to Ardgour, the scenic route continues on the A82 to Fort William and on for a few miles until you turn left on the A830 crossing the River Lochy at the Ben Nevis Distillery roundabout.
You'll continue on the A830 along the Northern shores of Loch Eil, and on to the Glenfinnan Memorial at the end of Loch Sheil, a stunning place to spot, with the Glenfinnan Viaduct behind.
Still on the A830 you then carry on to Lochailort where you need to look out for a left-hand turn towards Glenuig and Acharacle on the A861. This is a beautiful stretch of coastline.
Stay on the A861 through Acharacle and it will take you all the way to Strontian, past Salen; the last village before you get to us, and you'll hopefully spot us as per the view above on the way into the village of Strontian.
Once in Strontian, drive over the bridge and veer right past the green/village shops. We are round the corner on the left, well signposted with plenty of parking to the front and rear.
LOCAL DRIVING ETIQUETTE
Drive steadily and enjoy the journey.
Do not park in passing places.
Use the nearside passing places to allow others to overtake from behind in addition to letting oncoming traffic through on single tracks.
Allow cycles, walkers, riders and others plenty of space when passing.
Do not expect others to drive off road - not only will this damage verges but they may not be familiar with the terrain and this could cause a blockage.
Give others time and space to reverse if they need to, and be prepared to reverse if you need to.
AMENITIES
We would advise that you top up with fuel in Fort William, although it is available in Strontian, within sight of the hotel a few yards away.
There are public toilets at Acharacle.
There are several shops, cafe's and hotels en-route where you can take a comfort break if you need one.

Before you start: Glen Coe & Glen Coe Visitor's Centre
Fort William area: Glen Nevis, Ben Nevis, Neptune's Staircase - if you take a small detour from the route you can also include the Spean Bridge Commando Memorial while in the area.
Glenfinnan: The Glenfinnan Memorial, Glenfinnan Viaduct (where the Jacobite train aka Hogwart's Express/Harry Potter train runs).
